FOLA Addresses LAO Financial Challenges

Posted on: Feb 10, 2017

Federation of Ontario Law Association Chair Eldon Horner and Legal Aid Committee Chair Jane Robertson penned a letter, dated January 9th, 2017, addressed to Legal Aid Ontario President and CEO David Field regarding the financial challenges and restructuring plans of Legal Aid Ontario.

Eldon Horner and Jane Robertson "FOLA has long enjoyed a productive relationship with Legal Aid Ontario, based on candid and honest dialogue between us. We want to continue this productive relationship and to provide LAO a platform to inform the practising bar across Ontario of your plans and initiatives, but also to be a conduit for the concerns and ideas of the bar for LAO. We look forward to continued dialogue on this topic in the months to come." READ MORE.

David Field's response, dated January 23rd, 2017, includes "We appreciate your concerns about our deficit. This deficit represents nearly six percent of LAO's overall budget. LAO takes this development very seriously and, as you are
aware, has announced a number of proposed measures to address this situation. We
also welcome the upcoming review as an opportunity to confirm that our plan will
address the deficit. We appreciate the Attorney General's interest in the matter and
welcome the opportunity to work with MAG and to review our processes and projections
to ensure that low income Ontarians continue to receive the high quality services they
need." READ MORE.

Message from the President
