FOLA Advertising & Fee Arrangements Consultation for Real Estate Lawyers

The Law Society of Ontario’s Advertising and Fee Arrangements Issues Working Group is examining practices involving the payment of fees and the offering of benefits by title insurers to real estate lawyers or their staff and is considering whether additional regulatory measurers involving these practices are required.

  1. Call for Submission which was posted in the Ontario Reports July 20th, 2018 (deadline for comment is October 31, 2018);
  2. How to Make a Submission” document which includes links to the consultation document;  the working group’s report to Convocation June 2018; and a link to make upload a submission.

Your FOLA Executive will be providing a submission to the Law Society of Ontario on this important issue by the October 31st deadline.  It would be very helpful to receive your input and the input of your local members who practice real estate.

Message from the President

On August 8th, I attended the first of four meetings for the Lawyers’ Legacy for Children Fund Advisory Committee. The President of the HLA is a member of such. This fund, which exceeds $400,000.00 (raised chiefly by the lawyers’ plays), is administered financially by the Hamilton Community Foundation. This advisory group has chosen food for needy children at the elementary school level as its focus for this year and next year. Application Forms for funding will be available on the Hamilton Community Foundation’s website September 3rd. Future funding of this important charitable arm of Hamilton lawyers was discussed. There are no immediate plans for a future play, but funding capital remains necessary. I would urge all members to consider adding to their will a bequest to “Lawyers’ Legacy for Children”.
