Legal Aid Organizational Announcement

Posted on: Oct 22, 2018

Legal Aid Ontario’s scope is far reaching with services that provide critical assistance to the most vulnerable people in the province. We intersect with every area of the justice system, with 600,000 assists each year in criminal and family courts and over 400 certificates issued per day.

Legal Aid Ontario has recently undertaken internal planning initiatives to streamline processes, clarify accountabilities, improve upon the client experience and ensure outstanding delivery of services. As a result, some of our VP and divisional accountabilities are changing.

Effective January 1, 2019, our VPs will be assigned responsibilities as follows:

Randall Ellsworth, VP, Regional Services will assume responsibility for districts across the province. In this role Randall will provide critical district oversight and leadership of the duty counsel program and the delivery of staff legal services, and will continue to build relationships with our justice partners.

Janet Budgell VP, General Counsel & Compliance will retain her current oversight of General Counsel and will assume responsibility for the audit and compliance functions for Legal Aid Ontario.

Rod Strain, VP, Central Operations will assume responsibility for central programming and be accountable for developing a more consistent client experience by providing oversight of certificate decisions and provincial coordination of panel management.

Jayne Mallin, VP, Clinic Law Services will be responsible for developing centralized clinic operations with a single point of accountability for policy, planning, programming and research for the clinics and Student Legal Aid Services Societies, which are critical to the delivery of access to justice services.

David McKillop, VP, Strategy and Public Affairs, will assume responsibility for initiatives identified within Legal Aid Ontario’s strategic plan and ensure coordination, implementation and monitoring through a single point with input from across the organization.

Louis Dimitracopoulos, VP & CAO, Corporate Services will be responsible for corporate oversight of financial planning, human resources, diversity and inclusion, IT, procurement and facilities and will assume responsibility for the Big Case Management Office.

Legal Aid Ontario’s executive management team will continue to provide strategic oversight for the planning and implementation of all organizational initiatives.

Having the right structure in place will ensure Legal Aid Ontario’s long-term success as we implement our strategic goals, develop and manage our organizational vision and continue to provide high quality, effective services for low income Ontarians.

Message from the President

On August 8th, I attended the first of four meetings for the Lawyers’ Legacy for Children Fund Advisory Committee. The President of the HLA is a member of such. This fund, which exceeds $400,000.00 (raised chiefly by the lawyers’ plays), is administered financially by the Hamilton Community Foundation. This advisory group has chosen food for needy children at the elementary school level as its focus for this year and next year. Application Forms for funding will be available on the Hamilton Community Foundation’s website September 3rd. Future funding of this important charitable arm of Hamilton lawyers was discussed. There are no immediate plans for a future play, but funding capital remains necessary. I would urge all members to consider adding to their will a bequest to “Lawyers’ Legacy for Children”.
