HLA Committees 

 

Continuing Professional Development

A Continuing Professional Development Committee, consisting of a chair and vice-chair appointed by the President and six (6) to seven (7) Regular Members, six of whom should practise primarily in the respective areas of Real Estate, Wills and Trusts, Corporate Law, Civil Litigation, Criminal Law and Family Law, and at least one of whom shall have practised not more than five (5) years, shall be constituted and have as its duties the following:

  1. to develop continuing professional development programs, conferences and events for the Association;

  2. to assess and interpret the needs and expectations of Association Members regarding Continuing Professional Development; and

  3. to assess, revise, add and/or delete, as necessary, the existing Continuing Professional Development program.

  4. to manage, develop and coordinate Continuing Professional Development activities with other groups offering same such as the Law Society of Ontario, and the Canadian Bar Association 

The Committee shall meet when required throughout the year, but not less than three (3) times a year.

Corporate Commercial Subcommittee

The Corporate Commercial Subcommittee exists to advise on matters pertaining to Corporate and Commercial Law that are relevant to the Board or its Committees, and Hamilton area Corporate and Commercial law lawyers. The mandate of this subcommittee is:

  1. To provide a forum for discussion of topics of interest to members of the corporate and commercial bar;

  2. To organize and promote CPD topics of interest to the members of the corporate and commercial bar;

  3. To advocate on matters of interest to members of the corporate and commercial bar; and

  4. To develop ways to interact with other practice areas of the local bar and related professionals.

Estates & Trusts Subcommittee

The Estates & Trusts Subcommittee exists to advise on matters pertaining to estates and trusts law that are relevant to the HLA Board or Committees, and Hamilton area estates and trusts lawyers.

  1. To provide a forum for discussion of topics of interest to members of the estates and trusts bar.

  2. To organize and promote CPD topics of interest to the members of the estates and trusts bar.

  3. To advocate on matters of interest to members of the estates and trusts bar.

  4. To develop ways to interact with other practice areas of the local bar and related professionals.

Family Law Subcommittee

The Family Law Subcommittee exists to advise on matters pertaining to Family Law that are relevant to the Board or its Committees, and Hamilton area Family Law lawyers.

History Committee

The History Committee is committed to preserving the rich and unique legal history of Hamilton and its surrounding areas. The Hamilton Law Association, for instance, is one of the oldest in this country (est. 1879) and over the years has had many members — each of whom has contributed to the area’s legal history.

New Lawyers’ Subcommittee

The New Lawyers’ Subcommittee is a subcommittee of the Hamilton Law Association Executive Committee and is comprised of lawyers called 5 years or less. The subcommittee exists to promote the active involvement of new lawyers within the Hamilton Law Association and the Hamilton Community at large, including facilitating participation of new lawyers in networking opportunities, practice management, volunteer opportunities, seminars and dinners. 

Real Estate Subcommittee

The Real Estate Subcommittee exists to advise on matters pertaining to Real Estate that are relevant to the Board or its Committees, and Hamilton area Real Estate Lawyers.
